Aston Villa teenager Carney Chukwuemeka has not joined his teammates on their pre-season tour of Australia, with the likelihood of him leaving the club this summer increasing.
The 18-year-old made his Villa debut in May 2021 and has now made 15 appearances for the senior side in all competitions.
The midfielder was also integral in England winning the UEFA European Under-19 Championship this year, scoring in the final against Israel in a 3-1 victory over Israel.
He is highly-rated at Villa but he has just one year left on his contract, with discussions over a new deal painfully slow after they begun in October.
If he does not sign a new contract, he will be free to speak to other clubs in January. Villa may choose to cash in on him while they can and let him go for the right price.
Not taking him on the pre-season tour to Australia – where Villa will play Leeds, Brisbane Roar, Manchester United and Rennes – suggests his future is in serious doubt, the Athletic report.

A string of big clubs have been linked with the midfielder, including Barcelona, Arsenal, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund.
If he leaves next year then Villa would only be due a small compensation fee, so if he is not going to sign a new contract then they will likely try and make some money on him this summer.
The Villains still want the talented teenager to stay and will continue to try and convince him his future is at Villa Park, but his absence on the pre-season tour could mean he is more likely to leave.
Explaining Chukwuemeka’s absence from the trip to Australia, Villa manager Steven Gerrard said: ‘Carney’s yet to sign a contract offer that’s been in place for some time now, so I’ve decided that the best thing for him would be to continue his training programme back at Bodymoor.’
